STROKES OF GENIUS
Raphael - Botticelli - Michelangelo - Dürer - Poussin
Since 1892, the date of its inauguration, the Lille Palais des Beaux-Arts museum has held an exceptional collection of old master drawings, which were bequeathed through the Wicar legacy. This rich collection of around 2.000 drawings includes masterpieces by some of the most famous artists, from the Renaissance up to the 18th century: Raphael, Michelangelo, Botticelli, as well as Cranach, Dürer, Holbein, Poussin and David. Thanks to these masterpieces, the Lille Palais des Beaux-Arts drawings room contains one of the most important graphic art collections in France, and contributes to the museum's international fame.
Jean-Baptiste Wicar was a painter who studied under Jacques-Louis David, and bequeathed this famous collection to the museum. To commemorate the 250th anniversary of his birth, the Lille Palais des Beaux-Arts will present a selection of 200 drawings rarely shown to the public, due to their fragile nature.
In comparison with this exhibition, the contemporary artist Ernest Pignon-Ernest, a pioneer of Street Art, has been invited by the museum to show about 100 drawings, of which around ten are original creations inspired by the Wicar legacy's masterpieces.
His monumental installation "Ecstasies", based on both the spiritual and physical manifestations of great mystics will be presented until June 30th 2013 in the Hospice Comtesse museum's chapel. Prices : Adult price 6€, Reduced price 4€
Acess for disabled people : Yes
